MOTION DESIGN

Video

Typathia started as a character for a different course entirely. I invented her about a year ago, along with a full backstory: she's the goddess of typography, created by Athena after Hephaestus's first attempt at inspiring the Muses, the Letrascepter, proved too powerful for anyone else to wield.

Typathia used the Scepter to make ideas permanent, reviving the Muses and setting the birth of philosophy into motion. It's the kind of origin story I got a little too invested in writing, backstory, mythology logic, all of it, for a character who at that point only existed as a single illustration.

In her story, Eris, goddess of strife, discord, and rivalry, steals the Letrascepter from her. Without it, the Muses turn to stone, and Typathia is left furious, desperate to get her wand back. I'd written that whole conflict down a year before I ever got the chance to actually animate it, so she'd been sitting in a sketchbook, fully imagined but completely still, for a long time.

So when a later course asked us to animate a figure from any mythology, real or invented, using my own goddess felt like the obvious choice, maybe even the only choice. This animation is her in that exact moment of fury: the wand just taken, the Muses turning to stone around her, speaking directly to camera before she does something about it. It was the first time I'd ever animated her after a year of her only existing as a drawing and a page of lore.

I built the whole piece around her performance rather than a big action sequence, the shifts in her expression, the weight in her voice, the kind of small details that make a static character feel like she actually exists somewhere. Getting to finally move her after sitting with her backstory for so long made this one of the more personal projects I've worked on, less about showing off animation technique and more about proving a character I'd only ever imagined could hold someone's attention just by speaking.
